Runza Casserole

Runza Casserole

This is a classic beef and cabbage casserole straight out of the Midwest. It's only 5 ingredients and SO EASY to make; I have fallen in love with it and I think you will, too!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Step 1
    Preheat your oven to 350°F
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat and drain any excess fat.
Add the finely diced onions to the skillet and cook until they become translucent.
Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook until it wilts and becomes tender. Season with salt and pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder to your liking.
  2. Step 2
While the beef, onions, and cabbage are cooking, prepare a 9x13-inch baking dish by greasing it lightly.
Unroll one package of crescent roll dough and press it into the bottom of the baking dish to form a bottom crust by sealing all the perforations.
(In the video I pre-baked my bottom crust for 5 minutes)
  3. Step 3
Spread the cooked beef, onion, and cabbage mixture evenly over the dough.
Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the beef mixture.
Unroll the second package of crescent roll dough and place it on top of the cheese to form a top crust.
  4. Step 4

Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for about 35 minutes or so. Then cover with foil and bake for 10 more minutes.

(In the video I only baked my casserole for 20 minutes)

Let the casserole cool and stand for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Note

If you watch the video where I made this dish, I halved this recipe from Cooktop Cove. I knew we would not be able to eat a casserole this large and I was unsure if all of my family would like it. Spoiler alert- they loved it, too. The only thing I plan on doing differently next time I make this is to add some Worchester sauce or maybe even a little bottled Italian dressing into the meat mixture.  I think that would take it over the top delicious!
